September/October is that time of year when the great and the [not so] good troop off to their conference jamboree at either a tired seaside resort or a vibrant city centre. For those of us in the broad labour movement we have the joy of attending two conferences within three weeks, the TUC and the Labour Party. This year the two organisations have been kind enough to book the same venue (Manchester) so I don’t have to learn my way round twice.
We have just held our first ever Unite policy and rules revision conference in Manchester. Delegates debated a phenomenal number of policy motions and agreed the structure of the Executive Committee (to be elected next year).
Two tragedies overshadowed conference, however. One was the shocking attack by the Israeli Defence Force on the ship bringing supplies to Gaza; the other was the awful murders in West Cumbria. Delegates expressed solidarity with the innocent victims of both events.
