I joined the Canadian United Steel Workers' (USW) demonstration organised by Workers Uniting, a coalition between the USW and Unite.
The protest took place outside Rio Tinto’s Annual General Meeting, against the company's appalling treatment of their workforce, who have been on strike for nearly a year.
September/October is that time of year when the great and the [not so] good troop off to their conference jamboree at either a tired seaside resort or a vibrant city centre. For those of us in the broad labour movement we have the joy of attending two conferences within three weeks, the TUC and the Labour Party. This year the two organisations have been kind enough to book the same venue (Manchester) so I don’t have to learn my way round twice.
Not content with their slash and burn cuts programme the ConDems are now looking to see if they can go even further than the Thatcher government of the 80s by turning democracy on its head and adding to western Europe’s most stringent regulations on industrial action ballots.
