The executive committee of Unite the union formally announced the result of the ballot for the post of General Secretary today (see below for numbers of votes cast).
Of the four candidates who stood, only one was a woman. Gail Cartmail, 55, currently assistant general secretary for public services said: “I would like to congratulate Len on his success in the ballot and I look forward to working with him”.
As a full time convenor in local government with 24 years experience of trade union activism and a current member of Unite’s executive council, I know only too well the trials facing the union.
As the largest union in the UK, we are at the forefront of the battle to protect our members’ jobs and conditions, and to ensure the future of the trade union movement itself.
I have been a workplace representative and branch officer for 20 years. I am also an Executive Council member of Unite and formerly of both MSF and Amicus.
I am supporting Gail as the candidate who I believe will provide the progressive leadership our union needs, working with our members and activists in facilitating change within our union and in formulating an effective response to challenges in the working environment.
I was a union rep for over 25 years in the IT sector and a member of the Amicus NEC before, during and after the merger that formed Unite.
I am voting for Gail Cartmail because I believe she is the only candidate who has the necessary qualities and skills to make Unite a progressive and successful union in the 21st century.
