In 2000 I arrived at JFK airport with a copy of the Independent newspaper whose headline declared “Gore victory” or words to that effect. I left the US eight days later and the outcome of the presidential election was still unknown. Bush got it in the end with disastrous effect.

Most trade union friends and acquaintances of mine are now in ‘vote Labour’ campaign mode, most but not all. For me the choice is straightforward, Labour or Conservative.
What do we know about what is at the heart of Conservative politics? One issue that I believe defines conservatism is the Party’s attitude toward equality. Women voters are said to be critical in the forthcoming general election and there will be a lot of froth and spin in an attempt to win women over.
